Judge sentences Russian to probation instead of 20 years
Judge Marcia G. Cooke (above)
Dimitrii Makarenko was released Friday from federal prison.
He returned to Russia.
Makarenko fled the U.S. on Jan. 3rd, 2018 to avoid a 20-year sentence.
It was from charges filed June 16th, 2017.
They included two counts of money laundering.
Makarenko was arrested a second time on New Year’s Eve.
He was sent to a federal detention center in Hawaii.
His reward?
- one-year probation without supervision (non-reporting)
- kept a thousand rounds of military-grade primers used in sniper bullets worth $100,000
- maintained his status as a U.S. citizen
How did that happen?
Ask Judge Marcia Gail Cooke.

As part of the plea deal made last week, Makarenko:
- paid a $40,000 fine
- paid a $100 court assessment
- returned the night vision goggles and other sniper gear received illegally in Russia
Dmitrii’s attorneys objected to the pre-sentence report.
They recommended a prison term of ten to 16 months.
